With worldwide spending on cloud services forecast to grow by almost 21% in 2023, the pressure is on for South African organisations to shift to serverless architectures. Sid Nag, Vice President Analyst at Gartner, is confident that cloud migration is not stopping.
He explains that infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) models, such as cloud computing, “will naturally continue to grow as businesses accelerate IT modernisation initiatives to minimise risk and optimise costs. Moving operations to the cloud also reduces capital expenditures by extending cash outlays over a subscription term, a key benefit in an environment where cash may be critical to maintain operations.”
Enterprises need cloud technology for a variety of reasons. Cloud computing allows businesses to scale up their IT infrastructure quickly and easily. It provides access to more powerful applications and services than what would be available on-premise.
With the cloud, businesses benefit from greater data storage and backup capabilities. Attractive pricing structures also provide cost savings as businesses only pay for what they use and cloud computing eliminates the need for large upfront investments in hardware and software.
Apart from scalability, performance, flexibility and cost savings, the cloud also supports an innovative business culture. Cloud-based tools can increase productivity and collaboration, as it allows employees to access data from anywhere with an internet connection.
Of the key trends identified at a recent conference on IT infrastructure and cloud strategies is a growing need for industry cloud platforms. Analysts expect industry-specific functionality to replace a one-size-fits-all approach to enterprise-grade cloud computing. It was predicted that in the next four to five years, over half of all enterprises will use industry-specific cloud platforms to accelerate their digital initiatives.
