Women’s Day: Celebrating the leading ladies at SEACOM

South Africa commemorates Women’s Month in August, with the Women’s Day national public holiday taking place on Tuesday, 9 August. On this day in 1956, over 20 000 women marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest the apartheid Pass Laws. To mark this special day, we’re celebrating the women in senior positions at SEACOM.

The information and communications technology (ICT) industry is traditionally thought of as a ‘male-dominated’ sector, however, there are many influential women that hold leadership positions throughout the industry. Whether it’s executives, data engineers, legal representatives or marketing experts, women play a pivotal role to play in every aspect of the ICT industry.

SEACOM is no exception; there are many remarkable women who work tirelessly to ensure the success of the company and the development of the future of ICT. These ladies strive for excellence and help South African businesses to achieve a more efficient, reliable and well-rounded digital ecosystem.

Women leaders at SEACOM

SEACOM is fortunate to have such a balanced workforce. There are many women from whom we can draw inspiration. While we are thankful to each and every one of them, we’d like to shine the spotlight on a few women leaders within their respective departments, from sales and marketing to solutions architecture and human resources.

Soraya Bagus: Chief Human Resources Officer

Soraya holds a Bachelor of Arts (Social Sciences) degree from the University of South Africa and has a wealth of experience in HR. She’s held numerous HR positions at banks, insurance agencies and telecommunications enterprises. Prior to joining the SEACOM team, she was the HR Executive at Internet Solutions, which falls under Dimension Data.

Here, she was instrumental in developing and implementing a strategic HR strategy that successfully enabled transformation, skills development and a culture of learning. This held massive benefits for the working environment and is a testament to her belief in enabling employees.

Lerato Dolamo: Solutions Architect

Lerato has over 20 years in the telecommunications industry. She started her career as a call centre agent and has worked her way up steadily. As a customer-centric person, Lerato understands what the customer needs when it comes to their network architecture. She has experience in support engineering and has implemented many IP and MPLS solutions for enterprises in South Africa.

Her job as a solutions architect started in 2012, so for the last decade, Lerato has been designing and engineering network architectures for businesses. She also holds Cisco certifications in networking and design, which makes her a knowledgeable and valuable member of the SEACOM team.

Kelly Crofton: Business and Project Management

Kelly is the whizz behind customer experience and project management at SEACOM. She ensures that our clients get the best service delivery and assurance throughout the business process. She holds certifications from ITIL and Agile, so is highly-qualified in managing teams, customer expectations, projects and the services delivered to our partners.

Kelly also has advanced skills in emotional intelligence (EQ) which makes her a great team member when it comes to interpersonal dealings in the workplace. These abilities have enabled Kelly to successfully manage and complete numerous delivery cycles, network rollouts, network migrations and service management agreements.

Deshni Harricharan: Enterprise Sales Lead

Deshni is an accomplished strategic sales lead with 16 years of experience in re-energising and restructuring organisations. She is an expert in developing strategic initiatives that drive sales through new business opportunities. This role requires a sound knowledge of financial, operational and personnel tenets.

Deshni takes pride in her ability to understand various markets and listen carefully to the needs of the client. These two traits are key to successful sales strategies. Her ability to streamline processes and provide support at each stage ensures that SEACOM customers maximise their benefits. This combination of leadership, customer care and commercial strategy is what makes Deshni a role model for women in ICT.

These are a few of the incredible and inspiring women that contribute to the success of SEACOM and the ICT industry as a whole. They make the work environment more dynamic, forward-thinking and ensure that the company continues to pave the way forward on the African continent.
