As with so many sectors, broadband networks face a steep change curve ahead as market and customer demands are in constant transformation. With an increase in the adoption of broadband, service providers need to be ready to deliver more bandwidth, faster, and at less cost. In the near future, broadband networks will increasingly rely on disaggregated architectures.
Internet service providers (ISPs) need to keep a careful eye and control on the movement of data, as well as increase the speed at which they are able to deliver their service to clients. They also need to bring down their running costs, like so many businesses. This is a tall order but the industry is responding.
One of main solutions emerging is in the form of disaggregated architectures. This infrastructure allows computing resources to be separate from storage resources. Disaggregated servers can be adapted; as storage and loads change, it doesn’t lead to a disruption or replacement of the whole server.
Since not all the components are connected, disaggregation means that software and hardware do not have to come as a package and can be deployed separately – leading to greater agility and shorter down time. It also means that ISPs can source from a range of vendors and use the software and hardware that is most useful to their needs.
Disaggregation makes it possible to offer new services or integrate cutting edge innovations as they become available – creating the necessary flexibility that is needed in the current climate. For broadband providers and their clients, this expands the possibilities for products or services on an ongoing basis.
Disaggregation also offers the industry a way of delivering connectivity to the client at a lower cost. While traditional packages have higher profit margins, unbundled hardware and software is cheaper and easier to scale. Low-cost, white-box servers are used, rather than the more expensive package options and there is the added possibility of flexible pricing.
The need for agility and quick response to shifting needs in the market means that the trends for the future of broadband are likely to be all about the value offering. This means agility, cost reduction, readiness for innovation and efficiency of service.
The pool of vendors is likely to increase, along with the speed of delivery and range of offerings. All of the above is, of course, within an ever-changing marketplace of needs and demands.
